Memorial Stadium, Football stadium in Kent, United States
Memorial Stadium was an athletic facility at Kent State University that hosted football games and track meets from 1941 to 1969. The complex featured permanent grandstands, press facilities, and an eight-lane cinder track for various university sports programs.
The stadium opened in 1941 with temporary bleachers and underwent expansion in 1950 when permanent structures were added in memory of 113 Kent State students who died in World War II. Its capacity grew to meet the university's expanding enrollment through the 1960s.
The stadium served as a gathering place for Kent State University's athletic events and brought students and fans together for football games and track competitions. It became woven into the university's identity and shaped the student experience for decades.
The venue initially seated around 5,600 people but expanded to hold nearly 20,000 spectators by the mid-1960s to accommodate growing crowds. Visitors should know that the original site no longer exists as a separate facility, though portions of its structure were incorporated into the current stadium.
Remnants of the original grandstand structure survive as the north end zone seating area in the newer Dix Stadium, preserving a physical link to the past. This integration shows how earlier athletic facilities were adapted rather than completely rebuilt when upgrades were needed.
