Montrose Mansion and Chapel, Residential mansion with chapel in Reisterstown, United States
Montrose Mansion and Chapel is a two-story stone residence with a mansard roof and rounded dormers located on a property in Baltimore County, Maryland. A separate rectangular stone chapel with a bell tower stands on the same grounds, set apart from the main house.
William Patterson built the mansion in 1826 and gave it to his grandson Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte as a wedding gift. The chapel was added in 1855, giving the property its current two-building character.
The chapel attached to the estate was built for private worship and is one of the few surviving examples of a domestic religious building linked to a grand house in the region. Visitors who walk the grounds can take in both structures and notice how the chapel tower stands out against the surrounding landscape.
The property sits within a military reservation, so access may require advance permission. It is worth contacting the relevant authority before planning a visit to avoid any difficulty on arrival.
Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte, who received the mansion as a wedding gift, was the grandson of Jérôme Bonaparte, the younger brother of Napoleon I. This makes the property an unexpected link to European history on American soil.
