Organ Cave, Natural cave system in Greenbrier County, United States
The cave extends through 45 miles of mapped passages and contains numerous limestone formations, making it the third-longest known cave in West Virginia.
During the Civil War, Confederate soldiers utilized the cave to extract saltpeter for gunpowder production, leaving behind the largest collection of period hoppers.
The cave tours incorporate interpretations from the Book of Genesis, connecting geological features with biblical narratives for educational purposes.
From November to April, visitors must make reservations for guided walking tours that include exploration of the main chambers and geological formations.
Scientists discovered fossils of prehistoric animals including giant ground sloths, grizzly bears, and Ice Age porcupines within the cave chambers.
