The Greenbrier, Resort hotel in Greenbrier County, US.
The Greenbrier is a resort hotel in the Allegheny Mountains of Greenbrier County with more than 700 rooms, several dining options, and dozens of activities across thousands of acres. The neoclassical complex features a main building with white columns and interiors designed by decorator Dorothy Draper.
During World War II, the property served as Ashford General Hospital treating wounded soldiers before reopening as a resort in the postwar years. In the 1960s, a secret bunker was built beneath the West Virginia Wing as a Cold War shelter for Congress.
The property takes its name from the nearby river and designer Dorothy Draper left a lasting mark through her bold color choices and decorative patterns visible in public spaces. Guests walking through corridors and lounges encounter her signature style with bright hues and floral motifs that date back to the 1940s renovation.
Visitors arriving at the resort find the main building houses various dining rooms and lounges, while outdoor grounds offer gardens and recreation facilities. Check-in takes place in the central lobby, from which guest areas and public rooms are easily accessible.
A secret bunker beneath the West Wing, known as Project Greek Island, remained hidden for decades until its public revelation in the early 1990s. The underground space included its own assembly chamber with seating for all members of Congress and was concealed behind a false wall.
