Lost World Caverns, Underground cave system in Lewisburg, West Virginia, United States.

Lost World Caverns is an underground cave system in Lewisburg with passages that descend to significant depths and display abundant stalactites and stalagmites. A half-mile walking loop guides visitors through multiple chambers filled with layered limestone formations created over geological time.

The cave was discovered in 1942 by researchers from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and later excavations uncovered prehistoric cave bear remains in 1967. The site earned National Natural Landmark status in 1973, recognizing its geological and paleontological importance.

The name evokes a hidden underground world that draws visitors seeking natural wonders. Today, the site welcomes people who come to experience the raw power of geological formations shaped over millions of years.

The cave maintains a consistent cool temperature throughout the year, so visitors should bring layers to stay comfortable during their time below ground. The walking path is relatively level and well-lit, making it accessible for most people, though good footwear with solid grip is recommended.

An indie music group recorded an entire album inside the cavern in 2021, taking advantage of the natural sound qualities of the underground space. This unusual choice demonstrates how the cave has become a creative setting for contemporary artists.
