Paramount Film Exchange

The Paramount Film Exchange is a historic building at 1725 Boulevard of the Allies featuring red brick construction, thick walls, and terra cotta decoration on its front facade. The building now contains office space across two floors along with an artistic studio.

From 1926 until the early 1980s, this building served as a distribution center where theater owners could view and rent films from Paramount Pictures. It was a key part of how cinema reached audiences across the region during that era.

This is the last remaining film exchange building from Pittsburgh's Film Row, where studios maintained regional distribution centers. The space reflects how films were once managed and circulated through this region.

The building is not open to the public but can be viewed from the street, allowing you to observe the architectural details and construction style of an early film distribution facility. The exterior reveals much about how these industrial buildings were designed during that era.

The building contained fireproof vaults with foot-thick brick walls specifically designed to protect highly flammable celluloid film reels. These extreme safety measures reveal how valuable and dangerous early film collections were.
