PPG Paints Arena, Multi-purpose entertainment arena in Downtown Pittsburgh, United States
PPG Paints Arena is a multi-purpose hall in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, used for sports and concerts. The structure displays visible glass fronts and steel beams, while inside the seating rises steeply around the central ice rink or stage area.
The hall opened in the summer of 2010 and replaced the old Civic Arena, which had served the city for nearly fifty years. The downtown location was chosen deliberately to strengthen the connection to the urban center.
The building carries the name of a local coatings manufacturer and stands as a regular gathering point for hockey fans who fill the seats wearing team colors. On game nights the space comes alive with cheers and chants that echo through the enclosed tiers.
Several city bus lines and the light rail stop nearby, allowing visitors to reach the hall without driving. Wheelchair-accessible entrances are located on different sides of the building, and elevators connect all levels.
The building received LEED Gold certification as the first hockey and arena football venue in North America to earn this recognition for sustainable construction. Natural daylight enters through the large glass surfaces and reduces the need for artificial lighting during daytime hours.
