Pinnacle Mountain

Pinnacle Mountain is a summit in South Carolina reached by a hiking trail that runs approximately 4.2 miles through dense forest and crosses several mountain streams. The route climbs to an elevation of about 3,415 feet and passes through varied terrain with steep sections and rocky outcrops.

The mountain was examined in the 1990s when researchers discovered more than 600 prehistoric carvings on its rocks. These markings represent different time periods spanning thousands of years.

The petroglyphs found on Pinnacle Mountain predate Cherokee settlements and represent early Native American art from the Hopewell culture period.

Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water, as the trail is demanding with long stretches without rest stops. It is best to start early in the day to have enough time for both the climb and descent.

This mountain is the tallest peak located entirely within South Carolina's borders and features distinctive erosion patterns carved into its rocks. This geographic distinction makes it a notable landmark within the state.
