Rollstone Boulder, Granite glacial erratic at Upper Common, Fitchburg, United States.
Rollstone Boulder is a massive granite rock formation sitting on a traffic island at the intersection of Main Street and Rollstone Drive in downtown Fitchburg. The stone was transported from a distant location and has remained in this central position, where it serves as a notable landmark within the urban landscape.
This stone was carried to Fitchburg by glaciers during the last ice age, traveling from northern regions over thousands of years. In the 20th century, community members recognized its importance and took steps to preserve it by relocating it to a protected location in downtown.
Local residents view this stone as a landmark that represents their community's character, standing prominently where people pass daily in the downtown area. Its position makes it a natural gathering point and a tangible connection to the natural forces that shaped the region.
The stone sits on a traffic island in the downtown area and is easily accessible by foot from surrounding streets. Visitors can view it anytime during daylight hours, as it remains visible from public walkways throughout the day.
This formation was preserved through a remarkable process where workers took it apart piece by piece, numbering each section for reassembly. They filled the interior with concrete and installed metal rods to reinforce and stabilize the structure for the future.
