Roxbury Highlands Historic District
Roxbury Highlands Historic District, Historic district in Roxbury, Boston, United States
Roxbury Highlands Historic District is a historic district covering elevated terrain in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston. The area features distinctive puddingstone rock formations that shape its natural landscape.
The area held strategic importance during the American Revolution before transforming from farmland into a residential suburb. Streetcar networks built in the 1800s connected it to the wider Boston area.
The neighborhood displays architectural styles from the late 1700s through early 1900s, including Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate designs that shape how the district looks today. These buildings show the evolving tastes of residents who lived here across different time periods.
The district is walkable with sloped terrain, so plan accordingly when visiting. A network of streets and pathways runs through the area, making it easy to explore on foot.
Black families from the American South established roots here during the 1960s, creating new communities in the neighborhood. The district received National Register status in 1989, acknowledging this important chapter in the area's story.
