The Roxbury Highlands district spans 170 acres of elevated terrain with notable puddingstone formations that define the natural landscape of this Boston neighborhood.
Following the Revolutionary War, where it held strategic importance, this area transformed from farmland into a residential suburb connected by streetcar networks in the 1800s.
The neighborhood architecture displays Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, and Queen Anne styles from the late 18th through early 20th centuries.
The Highland Park Architectural Conservation District Commission reviews exterior alterations during monthly meetings held every fourth Thursday at 6:00 PM.
The district earned National Register status in 1989, reflecting its significance as a location where Black families from the American South established new roots in the 1960s.
