Scargo Tower, Stone observation tower in Dennis, Massachusetts
Scargo Tower is a stone observation structure located on Scargo Hill in Dennis, rising above the surrounding landscape of Cape Cod. The tower allows visitors to climb and see across the region, with views that extend far in multiple directions from the hilltop.
The present structure was built in 1901, replacing two earlier wooden towers from 1874 and 1876 that were lost to natural forces and fire. The site commemorates the Tobey family, early settlers who arrived in Dennis beginning in 1678.
The tower serves as a memorial to the Tobey family, early settlers of Dennis from 1678, with a commemorative plaque installed at the entrance in 1929.
The tower is open year-round, though weather conditions may close it temporarily and make climbing unsafe. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and expect a moderate climb with steep interior stairs in a narrow space.
From the top, visitors can see both the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Cod Bay in different directions, making use of the location's position at one of the highest points on the mid-cape peninsula. This dual water view is unusual and offers a rare look at the region's geography.
