Uniontown Downtown Historic District, Commercial district in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.
Uniontown Downtown Historic District is a commercial area with 113 buildings spreading across 31 acres along Main Street from Court to Mill. The structures form a connected group of banks, hotels, apartments, and churches standing side by side in the downtown core.
The oldest buildings date from the early 1800s, but most structures were built between 1881 and 1932 when the city flourished through coal mining and commerce. This rapid growth made Uniontown an important trade center in the region.
The buildings display a mix of architectural styles that reflect the city's economic development over time. You will notice classical details on banks, art deco elements on commercial buildings, and Victorian ornaments on older structures.
The area is easy to explore on foot since buildings are arranged along a main street and sit directly next to each other. It helps to start exploring from one end and walk slowly through to see all the structures in order.
The district was listed in the National Register of Historic Places twice: first in 1989 and again in 2003 when its boundaries expanded to include more area. This second designation reveals that historians later recognized additional significant buildings nearby.
