Wharton Furnace, Iron furnace in Wharton Township, Pennsylvania.
The stone furnace structure measures 33 feet wide, 31 feet deep, and 31 feet high, representing early American industrial architecture from 1837.
Congressman Andrew Stewart constructed this blast furnace in 1837, which operated until 1850 during Pennsylvania's industrial development period.
The furnace site exemplifies the traditional iron-making methods that shaped manufacturing capabilities in rural Pennsylvania during the nineteenth century.
Visitors can find the furnace along Wharton Furnace-Hull Road, south of U.S. Route 40 and southeast of Hopwood in Fayette County.
The furnace earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 as part of the Iron and Steel Resources of Pennsylvania.
