USS Cassin Young, Fletcher-class destroyer at Charlestown Navy Yard, Boston, United States
USS Cassin Young is a Fletcher-class destroyer at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, now serving as a museum ship. The vessel has five dual-purpose guns, ten torpedo tubes, and several anti-aircraft weapons distributed across its deck.
The destroyer launched in 1943 and joined combat operations in the Pacific from 1944, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf. During the war, the crew rescued survivors from sinking vessels and continued operations until the end of the conflict.
The destroyer takes its name from a captain who died during a 1942 naval engagement in the Pacific. Original radio equipment, navigation tables, and sleeping quarters on board recall the daily routine of sailors during World War II.
The ship sits directly across from another historic warship and can be visited at no charge. For safety and preservation reasons, some areas inside the destroyer remain closed to the public.
During the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, two kamikaze aircraft struck the ship directly. Despite heavy damage, the destroyer returned under its own power and was repaired for continued service.
