University Circle

University Circle is an expansive academic and cultural complex on Cleveland's East Side, containing universities, museums, hospitals, and research centers. The district integrates educational institutions with cultural venues and medical facilities that together form a major hub for learning, art, and healthcare.

The area began to develop in the 1880s when Western Reserve University and the Case School of Applied Science established their campuses here. Over subsequent decades, additional educational, cultural, and health institutions relocated to the area and shaped it into the multifunctional center it is today.

The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History shape cultural life in this district. People visit to see art exhibitions, attend concerts, and explore collections that reflect the region's interests.

The area is well connected by public transit, with train stations on the RTA Red Line and shuttle services linking it to downtown and nearby neighborhoods. Visitors should allow plenty of time to explore, as the district is large and walking between different institutions is part of the experience.

More than 30,000 people work within this district, making it Cleveland's second-largest employment center after downtown. This concentration of workers means the place functions as a living professional hub, not just a destination for leisure visitors.
