Usonia Historic District, Planned community in Mount Pleasant, US.
Usonia Historic District is a planned residential community built around homes with low, horizontal lines and natural integration into the surroundings. It contains 47 houses, with three designed directly by Frank Lloyd Wright and the rest created by his students.
In 1945, a group of families purchased land to establish a cooperative community guided by Frank Lloyd Wright. The project put his architectural ideas into practice and created a model for alternative living.
The homes here show how residents created a community where architecture and nature work together, with each house designed to fit naturally into its surroundings rather than dominating them.
The district spans approximately 95 acres and is mostly accessible for walking and exploring. It helps to arrive early in the day to enjoy quieter conditions and better light for photographs.
Frank Lloyd Wright worked closely with residents and personally approved the placement of every house to preserve his organic architecture vision. This level of direct design control was uncommon for the era.
