Vischer Ferry Nature and Historic Preserve, Nature preserve and historic site along Mohawk River in Clifton Park, New York.

Vischer Ferry Nature and Historic Preserve is a natural area along the Mohawk River that features wetlands, floodplains, and several types of habitats for wildlife. It also preserves sections of the original Erie Canal with structures like locks, a dry dock, and historic buildings from the 1800s.

The site developed around the Erie Canal built in the early 1800s as a major transportation route for the region. The surviving structures show how important this waterway was for moving goods and people through New York.

The name comes from the ferry operation that once crossed the river, and you can still see traces of that history scattered throughout the preserve. Walking through the area reveals how this place was once a crossing point for travelers and goods.

Four different entrances provide access to the preserve with walking and hiking paths available throughout the site. The area works well for outdoor activity in all seasons depending on your chosen entrance and trail.

A Whipple Truss Bridge from 1862 stands on the site using a specific engineering design that was popular for canal and river crossings in the 1800s. This particular bridge style shows how engineers of that era solved the problem of spanning water without modern materials.
