Westcott House, Prairie style residence in Springfield, United States.
Westcott House is a Prairie style residence in Springfield, Ohio, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Westcott family. Low roofs extend into long eaves, while a continuous pergola links the main structure to the carriage house.
The Westcott family commissioned Wright to build this residence in 1904, making it part of his early Prairie body of work. After decades of use as an office, the building underwent a full restoration in 2001 to return it to its original layout.
The design reflects Wright's goal of merging living areas with outdoor space, visible in the overhanging eaves and wide window bands. Visitors can see how the architect used familiar materials like wood and brick to create a feeling of warmth and connection to the ground.
Guided visits show both floors of the main residence, the connecting walkway, and the outbuilding on several days each week. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes because the tour moves through different rooms and outdoor sections.
The wooden lattice of the pergola forms a pattern of shadows that shifts across the walkway as the day progresses. Few other Prairie designs use such a covered link between building sections.
