Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery, Family winery in Rio Grande, United States.
Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery is a winery in Rio Grande, New Jersey, growing sixteen grape varieties and handling all production on the property. From harvest to bottling, every step takes place on site.
The property started as a dairy and produce farm in 1940 and was later converted to viticulture when the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted in 1997. It opened for tastings in 2009.
The winery works with Rutgers University to study Italian grape varieties like Lagrein and Teroldego in New Jersey's soil. Visitors can taste wines made from these less common grapes during their visit.
The winery is on South Railroad Avenue in Rio Grande and is open daily for tastings. Wine shipping is available to most US states, so you can order after your visit if you find a bottle you like.
The name of this winery comes from the seasonal hawk migrations that pass over the property each year. If you visit at the right time of year, you can watch these birds flying over the vines.
