Notre Dame College, Catholic college in Grymes Hill, Staten Island, United States.
Notre Dame College was a higher education institution located in Grymes Hill on Staten Island, housed in a large mansion with views overlooking New York Harbor. The campus expanded over time through the construction of several academic and residential buildings including Flynn, Lavelle, Mahoney, and Spellman Halls.
The college was founded in 1933 as an extension of Fordham University, beginning with only 13 students. It merged with St. John's University in 1971, ending its operation as a separate institution.
The institution served as a place where women could pursue higher education and develop professional skills within a Catholic community framework. Daily life on campus reflected religious values through academic programs and connections with the surrounding neighborhood.
The campus sits on elevated ground with extensive grounds and multiple buildings that developed over several decades. Visitors should allow adequate time to walk through the various structures and explore the full layout of the property.
The college's creation was closely tied to a friendship between the Gans family and Mother Saint Egbert, who directed the Fordham extension on Staten Island. This personal relationship was instrumental in transforming the family's mansion into an educational institution.
