Long Wharf, wharf in Boston, US

Long Wharf is a long wharf in Boston that extends into the harbor as a straight wooden and stone pier backed by the city skyline. Its wide walkway stretches past rows of moored boats and small docks, where the water laps against the old pilings.

Built in 1711, it once functioned as the main entry point for trade and passengers arriving in Boston. Over time it saw the arrival of British soldiers in 1774, the departure of the wounded from Bunker Hill, and the forced return of fugitive slaves in the 1850s.

The markers along the pier point to moments when crowds gathered here to watch ships arrive or to protest against slavery. Today, visitors lean on the rails, watch ferries come in, and let the working harbor set the pace of their afternoon.

Wear comfortable shoes, since the walkway is long and exposed to sun and wind. The surface is mostly flat and open, making it easy to move along while boats load and unload nearby.

The pier was once long enough to let many deep-water ships tie up at the same time without crowding the main street. A small marker now recalls that enslaved people were sold from vessels docked here, a detail that surprises visitors expecting only harbor views.
