Hickory Hills Lake, reservoir in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, USA
Hickory Hills Lake is a private reservoir in Worcester County, Massachusetts, covering about 319 acres and surrounded by trees and gentle hills. The clear, calm water is used mainly for boating, fishing, and recreation, with three public beaches for residents and rules limiting motorboats to 8 horsepower or less.
The area was transformed from swampland into a lake in the 1920s by Charles Dickinson, who built an earthen dam to hold back the water. After his death in the 1930s, his son Arnold inherited the property before it was later sold to the Hickory Hills Lake Corporation, which developed the area into a residential community.
The name Hickory Hills comes from the hickory trees and gentle hills that shape the landscape. The three public beaches serve as gathering places where residents and families spend warm afternoons together.
The lake has a boat launch and is best explored by bringing your own boat, kayak, or paddle, as large boat rentals are not available. Bring your own food and drinks since there are no commercial facilities directly on the water, though restrooms are available at nearby parks.
One of the few lakes in the region with strict limits on motorboats, it offers a particularly quiet water experience that excludes jet skis and water skiing. Every July 4th, residents hold a boat parade where decorated boats with flags and lights gather, creating a cherished community tradition.
