Freedom Cove, Floating homestead in Cypress Bay, British Columbia, Canada
Freedom Cove is a floating residential community built from interconnected platforms made of recycled materials in Cypress Bay. The structure features multiple greenhouses, an art studio, and living spaces all integrated into a single compound on the water.
Wayne Adams and Catherine King started building this floating residence in 1991, using salvaged wood pieces that washed ashore during a storm. The project grew into a fully functioning artistic community that combined living spaces with creative work.
The art spaces on the platforms display handmade wooden toys, featherwork, and paintings created by residents who live and work there. Visitors can see where artists create their pieces directly on the water.
The site operates on solar power and rainwater collection systems, making it largely independent from external utilities. Access to the site depends on the residents, so planning ahead and checking conditions with them beforehand is important.
The entire structure incorporates around 240,000 recycled components painted in striking shades of magenta and turquoise. This bold color choice makes the project immediately recognizable on the water and sets it apart from typical floating structures.
