Vargas Island Provincial Park, Provincial park on Vargas Island, British Columbia
Vargas Island Provincial Park is a protected area on the Pacific coast featuring sandy beaches, coastal forests, and tidal zones. The park includes both upland forests and extensive foreshore areas that remain undeveloped.
The area became a protected park in 1995 as part of a regional land-use decision for Clayoquot Sound. This designation reflected efforts to preserve the coastal landscape and its ecosystems.
Indigenous peoples have long used these waters and forests for food and shelter, and their connection to the land remains woven into the place. Walking through the park, you sense this deep relationship with nature that shaped how people lived here.
You must arrive by boat or kayak from the town of Tofino on the mainland. Bring your own camping equipment and food since facilities on the island are minimal.
Black bears and wolves roam freely in one of the region's few undisturbed coastal wilderness areas. This makes the wildlife here notably different from more developed parts of the coast.
