Instituto Salesiano, government subsidized school in Macau
Instituto Salesiano is a school in Macau that teaches boys from elementary through high school, with English as the main language of instruction and courses in Chinese literature and history offered in Cantonese. The campus mixes older buildings with modern new structures, including three buildings that opened in 2023.
The school was founded in 1906 by Father Luigi Versiglia on land that once belonged to the British East India Company. Over more than a century, it has produced notable graduates including Domingos Lam, the first Chinese bishop of Macau, and many others who went on to succeed in various fields.
The school carries the name of the Salesian order, which has run it since its establishment. It serves as a social gathering place where students participate in religious activities and develop community through shared traditions like the school anthem.
The campus is located on Rua de São Lourenço in the historic part of Macau near St. Lawrence's Church and is easy to find. The grounds cover about 8,000 square meters with bright classrooms, and visitors can find a quiet courtyard area with trees where they can take a break.
The school anthem was composed by Austrian missionary Father Guilherme Schmid and is sung by students at school events. The student council, known as the ISSC, was established in 1997 and holds annual singing contests that strengthen community bonds among the student body.
