Moorish Barracks, Military barracks near A-Ma Temple, Macau, China
The Moorish Barracks is a military building with distinctive Indian and neoclassical architecture located near A-Ma Temple in Macau, China. The structure features pointed arches, lattice windows, and pale yellow columns that support a wide covered walkway on three sides.
The building was constructed in 1874 as a barracks for Indian police officers from Goa serving the colonial administration. It was later repurposed in 1905 to serve as headquarters for the Macau Port Authority.
The building displays a blend of Indian and European design elements that reflects Macau's colonial past and its role as a mixing point for different cultures.
The building is located on Barra Street in close proximity to the harbor and the historic A-Ma Temple. While the interior is not open to the public as it serves as an administrative office, the exterior architecture can be viewed and photographed from the street.
The building once served as a watchtower for typhoon warnings, sending signals to fishermen and residents of the port city. This function made it an important part of coastal safety during the 20th century.
