Penha Hill

Penha Hill is a granite elevation in São Lourenço that rises approximately 63 meters above sea level and houses a chapel at its summit. From this vantage point, visitors can see across the Macau peninsula, the harbor, and several connecting bridges that link the territory.

Augustinian monks built a church at the summit in 1622, creating both a religious and navigational landmark. The hill subsequently became a recognized reference point in Macau's maritime history.

The hill holds religious significance for the local community, with a chapel at the summit that draws pilgrims during important celebrations. Visitors can sense how this elevated place serves as a spiritual focus point for the neighborhood.

The hill is accessible by several bus routes, with the nearest stop located near A-Ma Temple. The climb to the top is short and manageable for most visitors, especially during cooler parts of the day.

British artist George Chinnery painted this hill repeatedly, documenting the Macau landscape across different periods of the past. His works show how this location shaped the cityscape over generations.
