Grand Lisboa, Skyscraper and casino in Sé, Macau, China.
Grand Lisboa rises 261 meters (856 feet) into the sky with a modern glass and steel structure that opens like a lotus flower at its base. The upper floors taper into a slender tower, while the lower podium forms a rounded, cup-shaped silhouette.
The gaming floors opened their doors in February 2007, followed by the full opening of the hotel rooms in December 2008. The construction marked the expansion of the gambling industry in Macau after the city returned to China in 1999.
The name combines the Portuguese word for Lisbon with the city's casino tradition that has drawn gamblers from across the region since the mid-20th century. Visitors often notice the golden ornamental details and bright lighting on the exterior, which make the building look like a glowing sculpture after dark.
The building stands centrally in the Sé historic district, easily reachable from most hotels and landmarks on the peninsula. The main lobby and public areas are accessible around the clock, while age restrictions apply to the gaming sections.
The entrance area displays the Star of Stanley Ho, a 218-carat diamond that stands as the largest cushion-shaped internally flawless D-color diamond. Visitors can view this remarkable gemstone through protective glass without needing special clearance.

Architecture does not have to follow straight lines and right angles. This collection presents buildings that stand out through their form: domes, spirals, tilted facades or organic structures that recall animals or plants. From Gaudí's mosaic covered works in Barcelona to the stacked concrete cubes of Habitat 67 in Montreal or the conical trulli of Alberobello, these structures demonstrate alternative approaches to construction. Some emerged from technical necessity, such as the temporary cardboard cathedral in Christchurch after the 2011 earthquake. Others are artistic statements: the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao with its titanium plates, the Dancing House in Prague or the cubist houses in Rotterdam. In Đà Lạt, the Crazy House transforms tree trunks and caves into habitable spaces, while the Atomium in Brussels represents a magnified iron crystal. These structures attract visitors but also raise questions about function and livability. The Longaberger Basket Building in Ohio takes the form of a seven story basket. The Lotus Temple in New Delhi uses concrete shells to form 27 petals. The Aldar headquarters in Abu Dhabi resembles a circular coin. These buildings expand the definition of what architecture can be.
Macau captivates with its contrasts. In a single day, you can go from a Portuguese quarter with cobblestone streets to a hidden temple behind a staircase, and then to a futuristic hotel lit up like a film set. The city combines baroque facades, grand casinos, and quiet gardens where a few tai chi practitioners are seen. Between Coloane and Cotai, each district offers a different vibe that attracts travelers looking for striking photos and unique urban scenes. This selection features the most photogenic sites in Macau, from colonial heritage to coastal views.
