Hausach, town in the Ortenaukreis, in western Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Hausach is a town in the Black Forest, set in the Kinzig valley within the Ortenau district and surrounded by wooded hillsides. The Kinzig river runs through the center of town, and the ruins of Burg Husen sit on a ridge above the valley.
The town was first recorded in the 13th century, when Burg Husen stood guard over the trade routes running through the Kinzig valley. The arrival of the railway in the 19th century opened the town to wider trade and changed its shape considerably.
The town takes its character from the Kinzig river that flows through it, shaping how people have lived here for centuries. Today residents and visitors gather along the waterside and in public spaces, making these areas the heart of community life.
Marked walking trails leave from the town center toward the surrounding hills and up to the ruins of Burg Husen, which offer a good view over the valley. A flat path along the Kinzig is an easy option for a riverside walk without much climbing.
The stretch of the Kinzig valley near Hausach is one of the few places in the Black Forest where rail, road, and river run side by side through a narrow valley. Looking closely, you can still see how 19th-century tunnel and bridge construction shaped the landscape.
