Documentation and Cultural Centre of German Sinti and Roma
Documentation and Cultural Centre of German Sinti and Roma, Memorial museum in Heidelberg, Germany
The Documentation and Cultural Centre of German Sinti and Roma occupies three floors across roughly 700 square meters, displaying exhibitions about Sinti and Roma through photographs, documents, and personal accounts. The rooms guide visitors through different aspects of this history in a structured way.
The institution was founded in 1997 as the first permanent exhibition center dedicated to documenting the systematic persecution of Sinti and Roma during the Nazi era. It was created to preserve the stories of these communities and prevent them from being forgotten.
The center houses a specialized collection with historical documents, photographs, and personal accounts that reveal the diversity and heritage of Sinti and Roma communities. Visitors find original sources preserving stories of families, crafts, and cultural practices.
The center sits in Heidelberg's Old Town and is accessible via well-marked paths from the city center. Visitors should allow enough time to walk through all exhibition areas at a comfortable pace.
The center intentionally uses different spatial arrangements to separate exhibitions about daily life from those about persecution, allowing visitors to process this history from multiple perspectives. This design approach helps visitors experience the emotional and informational aspects separately.
