Block 104, Architectural ensemble in Kreuzberg, Germany
Block 104 is a residential ensemble with commercial spaces and structured urban layout in the heart of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The area spans from Skalitzer Street and Mariannenstrasse northward to Oranienstrasse and contains housing units, green areas, and community spaces.
The ensemble underwent major transformations between 1977 and 1981, when two-thirds of the original buildings were demolished for urban renewal. This period marked a turning point in how Berlin approached postwar structures and led to subsequent reconstruction phases.
The neighborhood shapes daily life through its mixed-use spaces and strong presence of local crafts and street-level shops. People gather in the courtyards and use the open areas as extensions of their homes and meeting places.
The area is easily walkable with good public transit connections and stable walkways throughout. Green spaces provide rest spots while exploring, and plenty of places to linger in the courtyards and open areas.
After 1990, residents worked with landscape architects to transform demolished areas into green spaces, creating a new model for community-driven urban development. This transformation showed how neighborhoods could actively shape their immediate surroundings.
