Fatimid Cemetery in Aswan

The Fatimid Cemetery extends over 238 acres, containing 30 preserved mud-brick domed tombs constructed with protruding corners, representing southern Egyptian architecture.

The cemetery dates back to the Arab conquest of Egypt in 641-642 AD, serving as a burial ground for soldiers who fell during battles with Nuba tribes.

The cemetery includes decorated tombs of local saints where Aswan residents perform traditional prayers and circumambulation rituals seeking spiritual intercession.

Visitors can enter through the main gate, located a 10-minute walk from the Corniche, and follow the path leading to the Unfinished Obelisk marked by a four-story building.

The site contains a tombstone from year 31 AH attributed to Abd al-Rahman al-Hijazi, making it among the earliest Islamic funerary monuments in Egypt.
