Monte Monaco, Mountain summit in San Vito Lo Capo, Italy
Monte Monaco is a mountain summit at 532 meters above sea level near San Vito Lo Capo, forming a natural barrier east of the town. The slopes are covered with Mediterranean plants and crossed by marked paths.
The mountain paths were created over generations by local people to reach farmland and pastures. These trails remain today and show how the land was used in the past.
At the summit, visitors write their thoughts in a notebook kept in a small niche near a wooden cross. This space becomes a place where people from different times share their memories and feelings.
The climb follows well-marked paths that take about 90 minutes going up and 60 minutes coming down. The route is roughly 3 kilometers long and needs basic hiking fitness.
The summit offers a full 360-degree view stretching from Erice to Monte Cofano to the west and the Gulf of Castellamare toward Palermo to the east. Clear days reveal multiple peaks and the entire coastline of the region.
