Nakasu, Entertainment district and river island in Hakata-ku, Japan
Nakasu is an entertainment district and river island situated between the Nakagawa and Hakatagawa rivers in Fukuoka. The area contains more than 3,500 establishments spread across numerous streets and connected by 18 bridges that span the waterways.
The island formed around 1600 when Fukuoka's ruler Kuroda Nagamasa built two initial bridges to connect Chuo-ku and Hakata-ku districts across the sandbank. These early connections established the foundation for the area's later growth.
The district centers around open-air food stalls lining the southern riverbank, where locals and visitors gather to eat regional specialties like Hakata ramen and grilled chicken skewers. These casual dining spaces form the social heart of the neighborhood.
The district is accessible through Nakasu-Kawabata subway station on the Fukuoka City Subway line, with regular trains running from early morning until late evening. The island layout means visitors should use the bridge connections to navigate between different streets and neighborhoods.
The Fukuhaku Deai Bridge offers views of glowing neon signs that reflect on the water surface, creating mirror effects visible from multiple positions along the span. This interplay of light and reflection becomes especially noticeable after dark.
