The Sports Museum Yamada Collection was a three-story museum in Fukui, founded by businessman Katsuzo Yamada and home to a wide range of Japanese sports artifacts from different eras. Among the objects on display were signed baseball gloves, autographed uniforms, and other rare collector's pieces from Japanese sports history.
The museum opened in 2007, built around the private collection that Katsuzo Yamada had assembled over many years as a passionate collector of Japanese sports memorabilia. It closed in 2013, when Yamada decided to bring his collecting activity to an end.
At the entrance, visitors were greeted by a life-sized wax figure of baseball legend Shigeo Nagashima, one of the most celebrated players in Japanese sports history. This kind of display reflects how baseball heroes hold a place in Japan similar to national figures in other countries.
The museum sits in central Fukui and was within walking distance of the city center. Since it closed in 2013, it is worth confirming the current status of the building before planning a visit.
Alongside the sports memorabilia, the collection included objects like diamond-studded Hello Kitty pendants, which had little to do with athletics but reflected the personal taste of the collector.
