Asamayama kofun, Ancient burial mound in Sakae, Japan
Asamayama Kofun is a burial mound shaped like a keyhole, formed by connecting a square section to a circular section. It sits within a larger cluster of similar mounds spread across a plateau in the Sakae area.
This mound was built in the 7th century and demonstrates the engineering skills and social organization of that era. Its construction reflects how structured and powerful society was during this period.
The burial chamber held objects placed with the deceased, showing how ancient communities honored their dead through material goods. Walking around the mound, you can sense how important this practice was in shaping community identity.
The site is reachable by bus from Ajiki Station, followed by a short walk. The mound itself is open for walking around and exploring on foot.
This mound belongs to the largest kofun cluster in the Kanto region, with more than 100 burial mounds located here. The dense concentration shows how important this plateau was as a burial ground for communities of that time.
