Château d'Otomo M. ruines

Otomo Castle ruins are the remains of a 16th century fortification perched on a hilltop in Oita Prefecture. Stone walls and foundations spread across multiple levels and reveal how the original complex was laid out.

Otomo Castle was built in the 16th century as the seat of the powerful Otomo family and served as the center of their rule. The fortress was destroyed in 1586 when the family suffered a decisive military defeat.

The excavated objects reveal how the Otomo family lived and governed from this stronghold. These findings help visitors understand the role this place held in the region's power structure.

The site is accessible via marked pathways that connect different areas of the fortification. Good walking shoes are recommended since the ground is uneven and some sections can be steep.

The foundations show a blend of traditional Japanese and early European fortification techniques that emerged during this transitional period. This unusual combination reflects the military exchange happening in Japan during the 16th century.
