Senbutsu-shōnyūdō, Limestone cave in Kitakyushu, Japan.
The cave system stretches 900 meters through limestone formations, featuring an underground river and 30 distinct rock formations along illuminated pathways.
The cave formation process began tens of millions of years ago during the dinosaur era, shaping the current Hiraodai karst landscape through water erosion.
The entrance area includes a small shrine and statues, reflecting traditional Japanese practices of incorporating sacred elements into natural sites.
Visitors walk through ankle-deep water in 16-degree Celsius temperatures, with rental sandals available and a complete exploration taking approximately one hour.
Beyond the lit section, explorers with flashlights can discover three waterfalls in a larger cavern where the cave continues for several additional kilometers.
