The Matsumoto Seicho Memorial Museum is a biographical museum in Kitakyushu dedicated to the Japanese author's life and work. The building contains manuscripts, photographs, and personal objects across different gallery spaces, offering an overview of his career and creative process.
The museum opened on 4 August 1998, the seventh anniversary of Matsumoto Seicho's death, in the Jonai district on the southwestern edge of Kokura Castle's grounds. It was built in the author's hometown to honour his achievements. The building, completed in June 1998, was designed by Tadanaga Miyamoto's office in reinforced and precast concrete, with two above-ground floors and one basement.
The museum displays the author's reconstructed study, library, and reception room that were moved from his Tokyo home to this location. Walking through these spaces gives you a sense of how he lived and worked on his writing.
The museum is located in the Jonai district and can be reached easily from the local train or bus station. Plan to spend a couple of hours here to properly view all the exhibition areas and the recreated rooms at a relaxed pace.
