Japan National Route 10, National highway in Kyushu, Japan
Japan National Route 10 is a national highway that runs approximately 455 kilometers along the eastern coast of Kyushu. The road connects Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture to Kagoshima Prefecture, passing through several regional cities and towns along the way.
The road became a national highway in 1952 and was reclassified to general status in 1965. These administrative changes reflected the growing importance of transport connections across Kyushu during Japan's postwar development period.
The road passes through towns where local crafts remain part of daily life, including textile production in Kurume and pottery making in Koishiwara that visitors can observe in workshops.
The road runs parallel to the JR Kyushu train line and crosses several other national highways, making it easy to reach major cities and smaller towns. Travelers will find access to different types of landscape along the route, from coastal areas to mountainous terrain.
The route crosses four different prefectures and links areas shaped by volcanic activity and geothermal features. This geographical diversity makes the road a way to see the different natural regions of southwestern Kyushu in a single journey.
