Kokura Showakan, Movie theater in Kokurakita-ku, Japan.
Kokura Showakan is a single-screen movie theater in the Kokurakita-ku district of Kitakyushu, Japan, with seating for around 130 people. The building was fully rebuilt and reopened in December 2023, with updated projection equipment throughout.
The theater first opened in 1939, making it one of the oldest cinemas in the region. A fire in 2022 destroyed the building entirely, leading to a full reconstruction before it reopened at the end of 2023.
The cinema serves as a gathering space where local film lovers and visitors come together to watch current releases and beloved older films.
The theater is within walking distance of nearby train stations in Kokurakita-ku, making it easy to reach without a car. Since there is only one screen, it helps to check the schedule in advance to plan your visit.
At the reopening in 2023, local residents brought old photographs showing the theater across the decades, some of which were displayed in the newly built lobby. This made the reopening feel as much like a community reunion as a ribbon-cutting.
