Kokura Hibun

Kokura Hibun, Historical stele in Akasaka, Japan.

Kokura Hibun is a stone monument inscribed with Classical Chinese characters located in Akasaka, standing as a memorial to a renowned swordsman. The stele displays carved text that documents aspects of his life and influence on Japanese martial traditions.

Created in the mid-1600s, the stele was commissioned by a student to honor his mentor following his death. The monument preserves the memory of one of the most influential martial masters of the early Edo period.

The inscriptions reflect how scholars of the time honored Miyamoto Musashi's swordsmanship and preserved his teachings for later generations. Visitors can sense how this site represents the respect given to martial masters in Japanese culture.

The stele is easily reached on foot in the Akasaka area and can be viewed from the street without barriers. Visitors should allow time to read the carved inscriptions carefully to appreciate the details and historical content.

The stone serves a dual purpose as both a burial memorial and a teaching monument for those studying historical combat techniques. This unusual combination makes it a place where remembrance and education meet in a single carved form.
