Chisoku-in

Chisoku-in, Buddhist sub-temple in Nara Park, Japan.

Chisoku-in is a sub-temple within the Tōdai-ji complex in Nara, featuring traditional Japanese architecture with wooden details and tiled roofs. The grounds include gardens and pathways designed for quiet exploration and reflection.

The temple was founded during the Heian period as a center for Buddhist teaching within the Tōdai-ji complex. Over centuries, the site evolved into a place for specialized spiritual practice.

The name Chisoku-in combines chi, meaning wisdom, and soku, meaning sufficiency, reflecting Buddhist values embedded in the temple's physical layout and daily practice.

Visit early in the morning or late afternoon when fewer people are around. Access is through Nara Park's main pathways, and sturdy shoes are recommended since the ground is uneven in places.

The temple contains specialized meditation areas where Buddhist monks practiced finding contentment through spiritual awareness. These spaces still show the simple furnishings needed for focused practice.
