Shiki no Niwa, Japanese garden in Kitamachi, Nara, Japan.
Shiki no Niwa features traditional Japanese garden design elements including carefully arranged stones, water features, seasonal plantings, and pathways that create a harmonious landscape emphasizing natural beauty and contemplative spaces.
The garden was established in 2006 and designed by Masaoka Akira, grandson of the famous haiku poet Masaoka Shiki, to commemorate the poet's 1895 visit to Nara and his literary connection to the area.
Named after haiku poet Masaoka Shiki, the garden serves as a living tribute to his literary legacy and hosts cultural activities including tea ceremonies and ikebana classes that promote traditional Japanese arts.
The garden is open daily from 11:00 to 16:00 and can be accessed by bus from both Kintetsu Nara Station and JR Nara Station, with well-maintained pathways and informational signage for visitors.
The garden features an ancient persimmon tree that directly inspired one of Masaoka Shiki's famous haiku poems during his stay at the nearby Taizanro Japanese Inn in 1895.
