Valaichchenai Paper Mill

The Valaichchenai Paper Mill is a paper manufacturing facility in Batticaloa District that specializes in recycling collected cardboard materials. The site contains multiple recycling units, production halls, steam systems, water treatment areas, and administrative buildings spread across a large industrial property.

The facility was founded in 1955 as the first paper manufacturing plant to open in the country. It played a key role in developing the manufacturing sector in Sri Lanka and later inspired the establishment of other industrial operations.

The mill shaped the identity of Valaichchenai as an industrial hub and provided stable work for generations of local families. Residents still recall the decades when the facility was the economic center of the eastern region.

The mill is visible from nearby roads, though it operates on private property with limited public access to the interior. Interested visitors should check ahead to see if tours are available or if only exterior views from the surrounding area are accessible.

A direct railway connection to Kadadsi Nagar Railway Station once connected the mill to the regional transport network. This historic rail link enabled the facility to bring thousands of workers daily to the site and ship paper products efficiently across the region.
