Pasikudah Beach, Coastal beach resort in Batticaloa District, Sri Lanka.
Pasikudah Beach is a coastal resort on the eastern shore of Sri Lanka in Batticaloa District. The waters remain unusually shallow far from the shore, while white sand creates a long, gentle coastline ideal for wading.
The area experienced major destruction from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which reshaped the coastal landscape. Rebuilding efforts began after the civil war ended in 2009, transforming what visitors see today.
The name comes from Tamil language, meaning 'Green-Algae-Bay', showing how local communities have always seen this place through their connection to the sea. Fishermen and residents still shape daily life here more than visitors do.
The beach is most accessible during the dry season when conditions are calmer. Arriving early in the morning offers the best conditions and fewer people around.
People can walk several kilometers into the sea while the water stays only waist-deep or less. This unusual flatness allows safe, long walks into the ocean without needing to swim.
