Malta–Gozo Tunnel, Undersea tunnel project between Malta and Gozo, Malta.
The Malta-Gozo Tunnel is a proposed undersea route linking the two islands beneath the Mediterranean Sea. The infrastructure would feature two traffic lanes and an emergency passage to move vehicles between the islands.
Talks about a permanent connection between Malta and Gozo began in the late 1960s through various feasibility studies. The project has since moved through different planning phases to examine the technical possibilities of an undersea route.
The tunnel project garnered strong support from Gozitan residents who viewed it as a solution for improved connectivity with mainland Malta.
The project remains in the planning phase and is not under construction. Visitors can currently reach the islands by ferry, which operates between Malta and Gozo.
The construction process requires the removal of one million cubic meters of rock material from beneath the Mediterranean seabed.
