Aksay customs outpost is a historic fortress complex with underground brick chambers located near the Maly Log ravine in Aksay, Russia. The structure features earthen fortifications built across an area of around 350 square meters.
It was founded in 1763 and served as a border post protecting trade routes at a major crossroads of eight commercial paths. The fortress played a strategic role during Russian-Turkish conflicts as a defensive position.
The complex displays personal belongings of border guards, weapons, and equipment that tell the story of how this outpost operated in daily life. You can see the tools and objects that made up the work of those stationed here.
The site can be visited with guided tours through the underground chambers, where you will see historical artifacts and learn about border operations. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for damp, uneven ground conditions underground.
The earthen walls reach up to 10 meters in thickness and were specifically designed to withstand artillery bombardment. After its military use ended, the underground chambers were repurposed as vegetable storage and later as a shelter during wartime.
