Aksay dungeons, Underground complex in Aksay, Russia
Aksay dungeons form an underground network with eight main tunnels running west to east, several cross passages, and smaller rooms on different levels. The system extends over one kilometer total, with tunnels averaging 2 to 2.5 meters tall and reinforced concrete walls throughout.
The earliest documented records of these structures date to the era of Peter the Great, when Turkish prisoners were put to work constructing the tunnels. This initial phase established the site and shaped all its later military and historical importance.
The tunnels now host exhibitions showing how people used this place across different time periods. The displays reveal connections between ancient settlement patterns and later military purposes.
Access is arranged in organized groups, and conditions are dark and damp throughout, requiring careful footing on uneven ground. Visitors should prepare for limited lighting and bring appropriate clothing for the cool underground temperature.
Several sections of the underground network contain water-filled chambers that form subterranean pools, creating a rare geological feature. These flooded spaces give the site a mysterious quality that sets it apart from typical fortifications.
