Park Imeni Sorokaletiya Oktyabrya, Urban park in Krasnodar, Russia
Park Imeni Sorokaletiya Oktyabrya is a protected park occupying a river island in Krasnodar, Russia, surrounded on most sides by the Kuban River. Paths wind through groves of old oak trees and planted gardens, opening onto the riverbanks at several points around the island.
The land was granted in 1876 to Marfa Golovata, widow of a well-known Kuban officer. The German entrepreneur Adolf Rokkel later took over the site and turned it into an organized park open to visitors.
Locals in Krasnodar call this park Solnechny Ostrov, which means Sunny Island in Russian, far more often than its official name. On weekends, families spread out along the riverbank paths and children play near the wooden bridge that connects the island to the mainland.
The park is easy to explore on foot, and a single loop along the main path covers most of the island. In the warmer months, coming in the morning is a good idea, as the shaded spots near the riverbank stay cooler earlier in the day.
A solitary oak near the wooden bridge is thought to be around 150 years old and was growing here long before the park was laid out. It is one of the few remaining trees that show what the island's natural vegetation looked like before any development took place.
